If there was one thing I could not live without..

..A world of color. Someone once asked me, "What is one thing you cannot live without?" Some people say things that matter most. Family, friends, the comfort of home. Some say things that touch us, beautiful music, love, laughter. Some are wiseguys and say air.

"I could not live life if I did not have my five senses."

He said that was cheating, and I was forced to think it over and pick one single thing.  I thought about the intangible things that are often overlooked. The things that people never really think about, because it's always been there but if it were to disappear overnight, the world would never be the same. I realized that if I were to wake up every morning and see nothing but gray, I would feel so empty. To live life without color is to live in ignorance of our world's splendor.  To never know the difference between sunset's golden wisps and dawn's rosy streaks. To never see how the oceans' blues and greens are forever changing. To never be captivated by someone's eyes as you speak to them. To never awe at how brightly stars can shine against a cobalt night sky. Would flowers matter? Would art exist? Would nature inspire? Crayola definitely would never have happened. What else wouldn't?

Everyone is different, I know what makes me happy and I'm thankful for it everyday. Little things, like the bright pop of the first spring crocuses breaking through winter's snow. Colorful balloons floating high in the sky and butterfly wings flittering low. Bright city lights and clear suburban skies. If they were all without color one day, I'd never understand appreciation for life's beauty. Always remember that life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the number of moments that take your breath away.
